Comenzó como fotógrafo, de carácter distraído . Cabrera Infante, modelo, contó que tras una sesión de varias horas olvidó sacar la tapa del objetivo. Fue uno de los mejores operadores del cine del siglo XX. Su característica principal fue la utilización de la luz natural como única fuente de luz, dejando de lado filtros y trucos. Trabajó con los mejores directores del momento (Fracois Truffaut, Eric Rohmer, Martin Scorsese, Robert Benton y un largo etcétera).
Ganó un Oscar por “Days of Heaven” (Terence Malik) y un Cesar por “El último metro” (Truffaut). Dirigió sus propios documentales. Autor de un sobresaliente libro de cine “Días de una cámara”. La organización Human Rigths Watch otorga cada año un premio cinematográfico con su nombre. Nombrado Caballero de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras por el gobierno francés, fue considerado por la crítica, como un director de fotografía excepcional.
